The Future Is Now: You May Not Need a Credit Card to Pay Tabs Anymore Soon
Leaving a card and/or ID with a bartender as collateral when you open a tab can be frustrating, especially if you want to leave and it’s hard to get that bartender’s attention or if you forget your card at the bar (don’t worry, it’s happened to almost everyone). This latest credit card development might be in your best interest in you’ve found yourself in these situations one too many times, though.
MasterCard is updating its mobile functions so tabs can be opened at cooperating restaurants and bars in the U.S. and U.K. The “Open Tab” feature will allow customers to open their tab, monitor it, and pay all without taking out their card. It’ll be free for consumers and will cost the same fee for restaurants/bars as if they were swiping the card.
